Internship assignment: research on Microbial Influenced Corrosion (MIC)

Zakaria Boujatouy

Hello, my name is Zakaria Boujatouy (22). I am a fourth-year student of Biomedical Research with a minor in biotechnology at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences. My internship assignment involves research on Microbial Influenced Corrosion (MIC).

Iron is the most used metal in the world. Corrosion of iron is therefore a major problem that must be prevented as much as possible. The occurrence of corrosion is especially difficult in closed off and hard to reach areas such as oil drums and pipelines. One of the forms of corrosion that is often creating problems in these cases is MIC. We will try to develop a method to cultivate corrosion accelerating microorganisms, allowing us to measure as much relevant data as possible, such as number of bacteria, sulphate content and more. If this succeeds, it will be easier in the future to conduct tests to investigate the resistance of different materials to MIC.

I am very excited to be part of Microbial analysis. The team is friendly and they are always ready to answer my questions. I look forward to working in the lab and will do my best to make a positive contribution to the business.
