How microorganisms cause blockages

MIC (microbiologically influenced corrosion) not only causes accelerated corrosion but can also lead to blockages. These blockages occur because specific microorganisms form a slime-like layer, also known as a biofilm. In addition, metal particles released by corrosion can accumulate and thus cause blockages, for example within filters.

What is a biofilm?

A biofilm forms when microorganisms, such as bacteria and archaea, attach themselves to metal surfaces within technical systems. In doing so, these microorganisms produce a slimy layer of cells on the surface. The principle is similar to the formation of dental plaque in the mouth. Particles from the water, such as sediment and corrosion products, can also be trapped within this biofilm. As the biofilm grows, the flow through pipes or filters is reduced. Ultimately, this can lead to partial or even complete blockages.

Because the biofilm protects and shields the microorganisms, they can continue to multiply undisturbed. This increases the risk of MIC corrosion. Microbial blockages are commonly encountered in geothermal systems, water systems, filters and pipelines.
