MIC in fire-fighting water system

As fire-fighting water systems, such as sprinklers, are only used in emergency situations, the water remains stationary for long periods in the pipes or water supply storage tanks. This stagnant water allows microorganisms to grow and form biofilms on the metal surfaces. In this biofilm layer, microorganisms can produce harmful substances without restraint such as acids that attack the metal and accelerate corrosion. In addition, biofilms can cause blockages in the pipes and filters of the sprinkler system, thereby compromising the system’s operation.

MIC causes problems in drinking water systems

For large networks such as drinking water systems, it is important to keep a close eye on the condition of the pipes and to monitor microbial activity. Blockages caused by biofilm formation pose a potential threat to all drinking water systems. As microorganisms attach themselves to surfaces such as filters and the inner walls of pipes, forming an increasingly thick biofilm layer, the flow is gradually restricted. This can lead to reduced water pressure or, ultimately, to complete blockages. In addition, Bacteria and archaea can contribute to MIC corrosion in the pipework of drinking water systems, eventually causing structural damage and leaks. The likelihood of MIC corrosion and biofilm formation is determined by the amount of nutrients in the water, the flow rate as well as the material of the pipes.

Blockages in geothermal systems caused by bacteria

Microorganisms can cause a range of problems in geothermal systems. For example, microbial growth in these systems can lead to filter blockages due to biofilm formation, and MIC corrosion can cause damage to piping, heat exchangers and pumps, among other system components. Microbial Analysis analyses both the microorganisms present and the chemical composition of the water, allowing risks to be identified at an early stage and implement targeted measures to control microbial problems. This is particularly important during the installation of geothermal systems to prevent operational issues later on.
