Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) causes billions of dollars worth of damage annually in the oil and gas industry. It is estimated that 20% to 30% of all damage to pipelines and equipment is attributed to MIC. Conditions in both onshore and offshore environments encourage microbial growth.

How do bacteria cause MIC corrosion in pipelines and storage tanks?

Bacteria and archaea in pipelines and storage tanks can cause significant problems. Among other mechanisms, these microorganisms produce acids that directly attack the metal. This results in localised pitting corrosion, a form of damage that can occur rapidly and unexpectedly and which lead to material degradation and leaks.

Early detection of MIC corrosion

Microbial Analysis identifies the microorganisms causing MIC corrosion using advanced molecular techniques. Based on the results, we work with our clients to develop effective mitigation strategies. These may include, for example, targeted biocide treatments or mechanical cleaning. Subsequently, we monitor whether the measures taken are effective.
